Happy Days

"THE DAYS GO BY, CERTAIN DAYS, GO QUITE BY, THE BELL GOES, AND LITTLE OR NOTHING IS SAID, LITTLE OR NOTHING IS DONE. THAT IS THE DANGER. TO BE GUARDED AGAINST."

Winnie is stuck. Buried in a wilderness of scorched earth she survives the everyday with fragments of babbling optimism. But she has her armoury, the lipstick, the mirror and the bag.

From his cave her husband Willie hides in the shadows, as they both await the inevitable bell to ring in another happy day.

Following the success of A Streetcar Named Desire, The Skriker and Hamlet, Royal Exchange Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom and Associate Artist Maxine Peake continue their creative collaboration with Samuel Beckett’s surreal masterpiece, Happy Days.

Queens of the Coal Age

"WE ARE WOMEN AGAINST PIT CLOSURES AND WE'RE OCCUPYING THIS PIT."

Anne, Elaine, Dot and Lesley. Four ordinary women, facing the closure of their community. It’s 1993 and the Parkside Colliery pit may be winding down, but they’re not giving up.

Their bras stuffed with contraband, they take a tour of the pit and refuse to come up. Settling into the depths of the mine, making tissue roses and walking imaginary dogs, they face bribery and threats. But as they dig in, those up top start to realise these ladies are not for turning.

This powerful play full of Northern wit is Associate Artist Maxine Peake’s first play for the Royal Exchange following the critically acclaimed, Beryl. Queens of the Coal Age is the true story of four women taking a stand in the face of a changing world.

The Act

‘THE ACT IS ABOUT LOVE BETWEEN TEENAGERS. IT’S ABOUT HOW YOU THINK WE LOOK TOGETHER. THE WAY THINGS FEEL, THE FIRST TIME YOU FEEL THEM. IT IS AWKWARD, FUNNY, TERRIFYING. IT IS EXCRUCIATING ANTICIPATION…’

Give her a cheeky smile, let her know you’re interested. You need to catch her eye, you know flirtatious stuff? You need to be a little bit vulnerable. Be confident. Show her your soft side. But you don’t wanna be too vulnerable. You don’t wanna be too soft. Pretend they’re the only one. Because then they’ll feel special. More Information
